Charlotte Grant is the highest-profile omission from Tony Gustavsson’s squad with the coach rolling the dice on Caitlin Foord and Katrina Gorry.
Charlotte Grant has become the highest-profile Matildas regular to miss the cut for Paris 2024, failing to make the 18-player squad unveiled on Tuesday as coach Tony Gustavsson took gambles on the fitness of Caitlin Foord and Katrina Gorry.
Grant, 22, broke into Gustavsson’s first-team calculations during Ellie Carpenter’s ACL injury recovery from mid-2022 and deputised strongly at right-back but has struggled for minutes since her return to the national team and played only a bit-part role at the World Cup. As expected, Gustavsson has named Gorry, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since March, and Foord, who tweaked her hamstring against China on Friday night. Gorry told this masthead last month that she was confident she would recover in time to play in Paris., has also been named as an alternate, with Teagan Micah chosen as Mackenzie Arnold’s back-up as goalkeeper.
