In the midst of a global grape glut, it might be a case of go niche or go broke. Peter Valeri is pinning his hopes on grapes linked to his Italian heritage.

Low grape prices this vintage have prompted many Riverina growers to rip out vines, but Peter Valeri is taking a more positive approach involving grapes linked to his Italian heritage.

Vermentino, Fiano, and Nero d'Avola have also been planted, with the new varieties now making up about a third of the vineyard.The wine industry in the Riverina is bearing the brunt of a global oversupply, subdued demand, and three years of The Valeri family has seen the impact on the traditional varieties in their vineyard and were unable to find a market for some of those grapes this vintage.

"Hopefully, that's a way to have better control over the entire product and build a brand from there," he said."It's such a competitive market, so many regions that make fantastic wine and to shine in amongst the rest of Australia is quite a challenge, but I think with these varieties, we've got everything we need to achieve that.
