Wine grape growers have spoken at a senate inquiry to plead for a mandatory code of conduct to ensure they get fair prices for their produce.
It follows four years of price offers from wine companies that are hundreds of dollars below the cost of production per tonne. The next hearing will be held early next year and a report is expected to be handed down in February. Growers in Australia's largest wine grape growing region have made an emotional plea for the establishment of a mandatory code of conduct and warned that many will not make it to the 2026 vintage otherwise.
Growers want to see fair pricing for products, clear quality assessment standards and penalties introduced.Second-generation Barmera grape grower Jason Perrin has long been in favour of a mandatory code to level the playing field between wine companies and producers. He said the current arrangement meant wine grape growers did not know what prices they would be offered until the second week of December, which put them on the back foot ahead of harvest.
"It's very important that we see change — there's been earlier inquiries which haven't resolved it in the actions that growers are looking for," she said. "The competition between winemakers is intense and we simply do not have the ability to unilaterally set grape prices for grape growers or pricing for consumers," he said.Treasury Wine Estates, one of the world's largest wine companies and producers of brands such as Penfolds, is more open to supporting the change.
