Former BHP executive Mark Swinnerton’s clean energy start-up has struck a deal with Yancoal to revive an idled mining hub.
Austar has been idle for two and a half years and Mr Swinnerton says ventilation shafts that connect the underground mine to surface look like a prospective place for Green Gravity to establish its product.“It has six mine shafts on site, all of which are really interesting and there are a blend of different types,” he said.
The memorandum of understanding with Yancoal will see the two companies work together on a feasibility study for installation of Green Gravity’s equipment. Coal mining precincts also tend to have engineered landforms with significant changes in elevation such as ventilation shafts or the sheer walls of open pits; a trait that can help when establishing pumped hydro or gravitational energy systems.“This MOU with Green Gravity is a demonstration that we are serious in assessing potential renewable energy opportunities and in collaborating with innovative partners to progress our strategy and vision for Yancoal’s future,” said Mr Moult in a statement.
BHP was also working on a plan for the future of the Mt Arthur coal mine site, after announcing earlier this year that it would seek permission to cease mining coal at the site in 2030.
