A gray whale that washed up along the coast near Muir Beach will be left to decompose, authorities said this week.
A necropsy conducted last week revealed that the 38-foot female suffered bodily trauma likely due to a ship strike, Rulli said. The department considered trying to fundraise $5,000 to match the center’s estimate to tow the whale 50 miles offshore but the idea was abandoned because of time and difficulty removing the animal.
