Great price, prime location, so why no demand for this derelict dome?
Famous American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller was the brains behind the ball-like structure.
"Some of them are basically like papier-mâché with resin and sawdust stretched over triangles of wires; others were quarter-inch toughened glass and still others were multi-coloured acrylic sheets."Historian Doug Patterson has been exploring The Dome's history and pondering its future. The Dome became a drawcard for architectural students and tourists for three decades with various owners at the helm. The building even featured on postcards for the town.
It was advertised as having development plans "ready to lodge" for six commercial tenancies and 14 townhouses, but the sale has now been put on hold. "It's been something we've been hoping and hoping to see transformed by someone's new vision, but it just hasn't been able to get off the ground, unfortunately."
