Concerns are growing are on the island as the peak tourist season approaches
A popular holiday destination could face a ‘severe drought’ if action isn’t taken, experts have warned. Low rainfall and baking summers have caused ‘extreme’ conditions in Crete, with a water management plan desperately needed.
The issue is expected to worsen in August during the height of the tourism season when the need for water is at its highest. It comes as Greece and southern Europe have endured blistering conditions in recent weeks, with temperatures reaching the low 40s in parts. The University of Crete’s Museum of Natural History has issued a stark warning, describing the situation on the island, in the Aegean sea, as “extreme” following “very disappointing” rainfall, snowfall, and soaring temperatures, local news site ethakitmerini.com reports. The experts said: “Nature may still have certain adaptation mechanisms, but as the summer progresses and needs rise with the peak of the tourism season in August, the problem will grow in many parts of the island.
Spain has also faced extreme conditions this year. In the spring Catalonia experienced a drought that was ‘thought to be the worst in 200 years’ with restrictions placed upon farmers, while tourists in Barcelona were met with signs of a ‘drought alert’. In May this year the European Environment Agency warned that climate change is worsening droughts in Europe and highlighted the wildfire risks associated with droughts in southern Europe.
