A movement against businesses charging people to sit on beaches now has thousands of local supporters

Locals on Greek islands Paros and Naxos are protesting against holidaymakers and residents being charged up to €120 for sun loungers on beaches. The idyllic sands and waters in Greece attract millions of visitors every year, but it appears some establishments are taking advantage of tourists.

Last week, hundreds of locals staged a sit-in on beaches to draw attention to their cause, complaining beachfront businesses have planted pricey sun-loungers on the sand, forcing many away. In Greece, all beaches are public spaces, but businesses such as bars, hotels and restaurants are able to rent areas for customers to sit it.

The Save Paros Beaches group has shown one firm charging €60 to rent an umbrella and two sunbeds for the day. Meanwhile, it's €120 per day to sit in a supposed "VIP area".
