Recent rainfall has boosted confidence among farmers that they may finally turn a profit after a prolonged drought
The chief of Victoria’s peak farming group says major rainfall has ended the drought in many parts of the state, after Melbourne had the wettest start to the year in a century.
Victorian Farmers Federation president David Jochinke said the downpours had brought welcome relief for many farmers but it was yet to be seen whether it would translate into profits.“Technically I would say yes the drought has broken but what does that actually mean?” he said. “It means we’re still a long way from turning that water into money.”
Figures provided by the Bureau of Meteorology showed many regions had already received more than their average monthly rainfall in April or were on track to surpass it.Mildura has had 26.6mm so far, compared to its average 19.1mm. To the south-west, Warrnambool has had 37mm with an average of 52.5mm for April.
But Deloitte Access Economics partner Daniel Terrill said recent rains in the farming sector had given confidence to farmers that it would be a good year ahead.“A lot of people didn’t notice the drought-breaking rains in recent months, amongst bigger headlines, but it’s left us in a good position for the growing season ahead, to grow much more than we need for our own consumption,” he said.
