The Victorian Greens claimed a “Greenslide” victory in a series of inner urban seats on Saturday, raising the possibility they could win seven seats in the lower house, more than doubling their representation.
Greens leader Samantha Ratnam and Richmond candidate Gabrielle de Vietri arrive at a Collingwood bar on Saturday night.Party leader Samantha Ratnam declared the result a “Greenslide” and deputy leader Ellen Sandell, the member for Melbourne, told the ABC’s election panel the vote amounted to a “Green wave”.
The party significantly benefited from the Liberal Party’s decision to direct preferences to them above Labor on their how-to-vote cards, which made the difference in formerly safe Labor seats. This will ultimately have the effect of pushing the Victorian parliament to the left. Animal Justice Party and Victorian Socialists preferences were also flowing to the Greens.
The minor party entered the Richmond campaign the favourite after longstanding member and former planning minister Richard Wynne announced his retirement.
