EU scientists say 2021 was the fifth warmest year on record globally and call for action against record levels of planet-warming greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

Countries around the world have been blasted by a relentless assault of disasters linked to global warming, prompting activists to demand swift action against the climate crisis.

Globally, 2021 was the fifth hottest year on record, with an average temperature 1.1-1.2 degrees Celsius above 1850-1900 levels, the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service said in a report on Monday. Global levels of planet-warming carbon dioxide and methane, the main greenhouse gases, in the atmosphere hit record highs last year, C3S said in its latest annual assessment.

From floods in Europe, China and South Sudan, to wildfires in Siberia and the United States, 2021 one of the worst years for natural disasters.
