The Greens are threatening to derail Labor’s climate change legislative agenda over its radical push to ban coal and gas.

The Greens have refused to commit to passing the Albanese Government’s safeguard mechanism scheme which would require the country’s largest polluters to purchase carbon offsets if they surpass a Co2 emissions threshold.

The Senator said the government’s safeguard mechanism – which will aim to cut emissions by up to six per cent a year from large polluters – would require legislation and warned that the Greens held the balance of power in Senate. “This is where we will be holding the government’s feet to the fire, you can’t be opening up new coal and gas while saying you’re going to reduce pollution it’s not just basic science, it’s basic maths.
