The Greens and the crossbench have unleashed on Labor’s budget and gas tax changes with Adam Bandt accusing the government of “betraying the battlers”.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers have hailed the upcoming budget for looking out for Australia’s most vulnerable with a suite of measures targeting at-risk households.

“Labor’s budget will spend more on tax breaks for wealthy property investors with multiple properties than it will on its cost of living packages,” Mr Bandt said at a press conference in Canberra on Monday. “This budget should be freezing rents, lifting people out of poverty and making the gas corporations pay their fair share of tax but it does none of that.”Labor’s changes to the single parent payment, raising the cut off age for children from eight to 14.
