Last year, it was "The Guardians," a group of journalists who have been targeted or assaulted for their work. In 2017, it was "The Silence Breakers," the group of people who came forward to report sexual misconduct. Past Persons of the Year include Adolf Hitler, Ayatollah Khomeini and Joseph Stalin. The shortlist this year included Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, The Whistleblower and the Hong Kong protestors.

The Greta who stole Christmas | Sky News AustraliaDigital Editor Jack Houghton\n \nA Christmas furore has erupted inside a Victorian council after a rogue artist used the town’s holiday festival to paint a mural of Greta Thunberg on the side of a council building.\n \nCouncillors at Benalla Rural Council say they have been left with “egg on our face” after the Window-to-Window Christmas Festival was hijacked by eco-activists.\n \nThe festival is supposed give artists a chance to paint “Christmas icons” on the wall of council buildings.\n\nInstead, one artist opted to paint a large mural of climate change activist Greta Thunberg who claims carbon emissions will kill humanity.\n \nCouncillor Peter Davis told Sky News he was “disappointed” the space was used to promote Greta rather than a “bubbly picture of Santa Claus”.\n \n“I came home to my surprise to see it on the building,” he said.\n \n“I am personally a bit disappointed it never came over council’s desk because at the end of the day the council is responsible for what goes on our buildings.\n \n“We have to be very, very neutral because you have a diverse range of ratepayers. You’ve got yourself a good story though.”\n \nMr Davis said councillors were meeting tomorrow and he would complain “the due process has not taken place”.\n \n“If the due process had taken place then it may not have been there … watch this space,” he said.\n \nCouncillor Don Firth said he had personally received complaints from Benalla residents who were upset the painting was not more Christmas themed.\n \n“I can’t tell you what the Christmas touch is on Greta’s mural,” he said.\n \n“I saw it Friday at a function down near the painting and yes there were some comments made.\n \n“I don’t think they were positive comments but that is their perspective. Personally, I would suggest they would have done something a little bit more light-heartedly Christmas.”\n \nSeveral councillors told Sky News the small red earring on Greta’s ear was the “Christmas touch” the artist used to justify the paint
