The popular place began as a tearoom, one of the advertised features of the Scenic Loop...

. I found it very interesting. One reason is, having moved here in 1958 and living in a family that enjoyed eating out in fine places quite often, I had never heard of this place before. My dad was David Miller, a member of Mr. Josef’s University Club , the Red Carpet and later the “newer” ones — Club Giraud, La Provence and L’Etoile. Of course, some of these were private clubs because of the Texas alcohol laws.

But before it was a date-night staple, before the menu took a turn for the carnivorous and even before the restaurant had an address, Grey Moss Inn was a feature of a subdivision — Scenic Loop Playground , developed in the mid-1920s by E.A. Requa and R.E. Hildebrand. And it could have been a private club if the restaurant hadn’t already been housed in private property.

Lots in the formerly unspoiled tract were sold for campsites, summer cottages and lodges, with the promise of paved roads, electricity and water. Twin creeks were dammed to create spring-fed swimming pools; there was a children’s playground, a tennis court and an athletic field for croquet or baseball.
