Afghanistan records a sharp increase in the number of civilians killed and wounded in violence, as Western security forces pull out of the war-torn country.

Ms Lyons, the UN envoy who also heads the UN mission in Afghanistan, called on the Taliban and Afghan leaders to intensify their efforts at the negotiating table.

The number of civilians killed and wounded in May and June is almost as many as recorded in the preceding four months.That's the highest for those months since systematic documentation began in 2009, the report said. Schoolgirls sit with bouquets of flowers on empty desks as a tribute to those killed in a May bombing.
