At his introductory news conference with the Grizzlies, Smart still sported some green coloring in his hair. 'Boston’s my second home.' It was a small sign of just how much he will need to change after Boston moved him to Memphis . ✍️ ByJayKing

“Year after year, we’re always trying to continue to surround our group with great people, great competitors, people that have high IQs, super unselfish,” Jenkins said. “That’s what Marcus stands for. Ultimate competitor. He has the highest basketball IQ, super selfless. He exemplifies that on the court but also off the court.”Even in a relaxed setting Friday, Smart’s competitive spirit popped out.

“If this guy right here to my left says, ‘Hey, we’ve gotta do something a little bit differently’ and he leads by example, that’s going to set a tone for us,” Jenkins said. “Because when we do, the small amount of times we had charges, you felt the impact, you felt the momentum, you felt the excitement that the bench created. And obviously it made the film the next day and we talked about how important of an unselfish, winning play that was.

“And that’s what Marcus Smart embodies every single time he steps on the floor. And when we sat down a couple of weeks ago, he said, ‘Coach, I lay it on the line every time I step on the court.’ … When he comes and embodies that and showcases that and leads with that with our group, it’s going to take our group to the next level. And hopefully, we’ll take a few more charges next year.

“To be able to bring that type of player, that type of person, into this organization but much more importantly someone who also just passes the gut test. Marcus is someone that is just a flat-out winner, someone who’s willed his team through playoff series, has been to the Finals, has been to the Eastern Conference finals many times.

Though the Grizzlies want Smart to step into a leadership position, he cautioned that he will need to figure out how to navigate his new locker room.“At this point, I don’t know,” Smart said. “I’ve gotta earn these guys’ trust. Boston, I was there, I was the longest-tenured guy. I grew up with those guys. Here, I’m the new face coming in.
