Northern Territory police have arrested and charged two people after they allegedly entered a mine site on Groote Eyelandt and assaulted two workers.
Two people have been charged and are set to face court next monthPolice allege up to five people entered the site around 2am on Saturday, September 30, some armed with axes.
The pair have been charged with a number of offences including aggravated assault and criminal damage. A spokesperson for South32, the majority owner of the mine, said it was "a very serious incident" and that the company was "treating it as such". Local media has reported there was a second incident on Tuesday afternoon where two men, believed to have been armed with axes, were approaching the mine."The GEMCO mine gradually returned to operation from Sunday afternoon, however, we initiated our lockdown procedure on Tuesday afternoon and operations were suspended Tuesday night to ensure the safety of our people," the spokesperson said.
