This December, an opera unlike any other is opening in Brisbane

Thu 21 Sep 2023 06.38 CESTWhat can you expect from the Ring Cycle, an epic 15-hour saga being staged by Opera Australia this December?

From right to left: Chen Shi-Zheng, Leigh Sachwitz and costume designer Anita Yavich. Photograph: Rhiannon Hopley.or simply the Ring Cycle, has been around a lot longer than Tolkien’s epic and is regarded as one of the world’s finest operas. Its monumental scale means it’s also notoriously difficult and expensive to stage and performances of the piece are rare and sought after.

The incredible digital set was the work of Berlin design studio flora&faunavisions, which is helmed by esteemed digital content designer Leigh Sachwitz. For Sachwitz, the appeal of getting to reimagine the Ring Cycle was obvious.“It’s totally epic, right?” she says. “The idea of how you can take an audience on a journey over such a long amount of time with music.”

A lot of consideration went into getting the digital design right. To create dramatic spaces, the LED panels are kinetic and move into various formations throughout the production. To intertwine the digital and the real life, movement from the singers, dancers and aerialists triggers video using interactive sensors. Video projection is also mapped onto tactile on-stage objects such as rocks to create special effects, and parts of the costumes have digital elements.
