Three women and two men allegedly target elderly women with warnings of hostile entities.
Detectives believe a group of three women and two men are working together when they separately approach elderly women on the street in Box Hill.
It's alleged the women of the group convince their target that there is a spirit following them and that they or a family member are in danger.They then offer to help the victim rid themselves of the spirit by praying over their bag. The victim is told to not look in the bag for a period of time, and when they eventually do, they find money and jewellery have been stolen.
Detectives are investigating three particular incidents at Station Street in Box Hill - one at 10am on November 26 last year, and two at 9.45am and 1.55pm on December 4 last year.The alleged victims have lost over $150,000 in cash and jewellery.
