Foraging in public places can be controversial but it's only illegal if you uproot a plant
And while many can be easily grown from seed there are some staple ingredients which are commonly found across parks and public spaces across Lancashire that can be used in the kitchen. Garlic is used in countless recipes and it grows abundantly in the wild and is remarkably easy to find.
Make sure you wash the leaves well in cold water before eating them. The plants tend to appear from mid-February but bear in mind that the leaves tend to turn bitter after the garlic goes to seed. I bought some wild garlic bulbs online a couple of years ago and they've returned every year without fail.
Not expecting any success I shoved a couple of 'beyond best' dried out cloves in my herb planter last winter. And I was amazed when the distinct waxy leaves began to appear from the soil within a few weeks.
