A Victorian plant nursery is growing a native shrub to help expand the habitat of the golden-rayed blue butterfly, found exclusively in western Victoria.

The endangered golden-rayed blue butterfly is found exclusively in the Wimmera, and only has eyes for one attractive creeper plant, which plays chef and nanny to its young.

Being so reliant on one species of plant has meant the butterfly is limited to where the wild cultivars have settled, including Lake Wyn Wyn, Lake Hindmarsh, Telfers Swamp and Oliver's Lakes.The butterfly pollinates the plants, encourages genetic diversity, and attracts birds that eat the seeds, which in turn helps disperse the plant.

"We'll continue to grow the plants that may need re-establishing or the ones that didn't quite take well enough," she said.Until then, both women would like to see the butterfly's habitat become more prolific in the Wimmera and encourage the local community to plant native varieties and restore lakeside ecosystems.
