Guardians denied sweep as Nationals rally for 7-6 victory in the eighth inning

A tough loss for the Guards denies them the sweep over Washington.

Washington tied it in the eighth, 6-6, when Zunino was called for blocking the plate against Stone Garrett. Lane Thomas, with one out and Garrett on third, sent a fly ball to center fielder Myles Straw. Straw made a strong throw home and Zunino fielded it on the bounce to apply the tag to Garrett for what would have been an inning-ending double play to preserve Cleveland’s 6-5 lead.

Cleveland pressured the Nats the whole series with its baserunning and it paid off in the third. Kwan, with Straw on third, stole second. Catcher Keibert Ruiz, fearing a double steal, threw to third, but Jeimer Candelario couldn’t handle the throw as Straw scored for a 3-2 lead. Through the next three innings Bieber bobbed and weaver through the Nationals’ lineup. He two runners in the fourth, rolled a double play in the fifth and pitched around a two-out walk in the sixth.
