Triston McKenzie will seek a second opinion after an examination by Cleveland’s team physician, Dr. Mark Schickendantz, confirmed a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament.

McKenzie said he feels better about where he is now after talking to doctors than he did before his last start against Houston.

Francona said McKenzie has been “unbelievably strong” throughout the process, and that he asked McKenzie how his family had taken the news. After rehabbing a shoulder strain that kept him from making his season debut until June 4 in Minnesota, McKenzie said he now fully understands the fine line between wanting to be a competitor and prioritizing his health.

McKenzie told cleveland.com on Saturday that he thought throwing too many sliders against Houston led to his arm discomfort. The righty threw 34 sliders against the Astros after throwing just 14 in his previous start against the Twins. But on Tuesday, McKenzie said he did not think one particular pitch hurt him any worse than another.
