Let's revisit Mike Finger's 2015 look at the remarkable career of legendary baseball coach Cliff Gustafson.
Former University of Texas baseball coach Cliff Gustafson won two national titles with the Longhorns and seven high school state titles while coaching at South San. He sits at his Austin home on stadium seating once installed at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, where the Longhorns play their home games, by a bust of himself carved by Waco sculptor Arlin Horne after the Longhorns won the 1975 national championship. Gustafson was 23 when he became head coach at South San, and that first year he ran his practices just like his college coach, Texas’ legendary Bibb Falk, did. But the Bobcats didn’t win much in 1955, and that’s when Gustafson noticed his friend, basketball coach Jimmy Littleton, putting his players through a prolonged series of drills, each focused on a specific fundamental part of the game.
“Everything we did was simple,” said John Langerhans, a standout pitcher and first baseman on the 1967 team. “It was very fundamental. But we were perfectionists at it.” Every summer, boys from ages 7 to 14 could be found spending their days playing on South San’s field, with Gustafson providing tips and encouragement. By the time they made it to high school, they were prepared for his practices that often stretched for hours. They didn’t complain about huge expectations, either.
