Clint Gutherson made a strong first impression on his St George Illawarra teammates during a scrimmage against Manly, showcasing his leadership and playmaking abilities. The Dragons' new spine, featuring Gutherson, Damien Cook, Lachie Ilias, and Kyle Flanagan, combined for the first time and looked promising.
Clint Gutherson wasted no time impressing his new St George Illawarra teammates during a scrimmage against Manly on Friday. Gutherson , who joined the Dragons from Parramatta in the off-season, showcased his energetic and vocal leadership, barking orders, throwing a floating pass for a try, and ensuring the intensity remained high throughout the morning session.
The scrimmage marked the first time the Dragons' new-look spine, consisting of Gutherson, Damien Cook, Lachie Ilias, and Kyle Flanagan, played together. Dragons coach Shane Flanagan was thrilled with Gutherson's performance, praising his communication, defensive organization, and competitive spirit. 'We knew what we were getting with him, and he was outstanding today,' Flanagan said. 'Just his communication, his ability to get our defensive line organised – and get the right numbers right – and just the way he competes, that’s Gutho'. Flanagan also noted the progress of the Dragons' other new recruits, Cook, Ilias, and Flanagan. Ilias, who missed training during November and December, has been back for three or four weeks and is steadily improving. Cook, Ilias, Gutherson, and Flanagan are expected to play around 20 minutes in the Dragons' first official trial against the Sydney Roosters next weekend. They will then play a half-game in the Charity Shield against the Rabbitohs the following week. While the scrimmage saw several players miss due to minor injuries, Anthony Seibold, the coach of Manly, was impressed by the Dragons' physicality and their new spine. 'I was really impressed with the Dragons and their new spine,' Seibold said. 'They looked very, very good. I also thought the Dragons had a real physicality about them and probably won that physical battle this morning.'

Dragons Coach Confident in New Recruits to Offset Departures of Hunt and LomaxDragons coach Shane Flanagan believes his off-season signings and the team's playing style will compensate for the loss of star players Ben Hunt and Zac Lomax in 2025. With the arrivals of Clint Gutherson, Damien Cook, Valentine Holmes, and Lachlan Ilias, Flanagan is optimistic about the team's potential. Cook and Gutherson have been named co-captains, forming a new spine alongside Ilias and Kyle Flanagan. While Hunt's 35 try assists and Lomax's 186 points will be missed, Flanagan believes the team's structure and coaching will create enough opportunities for success.
