Manchester City took on Sevilla in Athens for the UEFA Super Cup, with Josko Gvardiol getting a full debut ahead of schedule.
In the build-up to Manchester City's Super Cup clash with Sevilla, Pep Guardiola had suggested that he would wait to hand Josko Gvardiol a full debut due to a lack of training sessions with the team.
Laporte, though, could still leave City, and the club have accepted a bid from Al-Nassr for the Spaniard. With that in mind, any plans to give Gvardiol time were shelved."Step by step. He still has to learn many things," said Guardiola before the match. "He didn't have much training. As much he plays, all the mistakes, he will learn."
The mistakes that the manager referenced were evident, too. Youssef En-Nesyri used Gvardiol's positional inexperience to move in between him and Nathan Ake to rise above the pair and open the scoring for Sevilla. He wasn't always in the right place, either, as Sevilla exploited the counter-attacking opportunities in the second half.
City snapped up Croatian pair Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol from Chelsea and RB Leipzig respectively, while Treble winners Ilkay Gundogan departed for Barcelona and Riyad Mahrez moved to Saudi Arabia. Aymeric Laporte's future at the club is now a hot topic too after City accepted an offer from Al Nassr for his services. Keep an eye on that one over the next couple of days.
