Gymnastics Australia has unveiled a new set of guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people.
The changes will allow individuals to choose uniforms, changing and bathroom facilities and compete in competitions which they believe best align with their gender identity.
Gymnasts will be allowed to wear the uniforms and compete in events that align with their gender identity under a new set of guidelines. Picture: News Corp The guidelines said participation in sport was a human right, referenced several studies which showed trans and gender diverse people suffer from anxiety and depression and recognised there are intentional and unintentional phobic behaviours within sport in Australia.
For new facilities and those receiving upgrades GA and AGO will advocate for inclusive spaces to be created. Alison Dunn general manager of Eastern Gymnastics Club in Box Hill, Melbourne welcomed the new guidelines and said she was “proud” to be involved with a sport that “takes such a strong hold on initiatives like this”.
