A jury has heard opening statements in the trial of Hadi Matar, who has been charged with attempting to murder novelist Salman Rushdie.
Rushdie was stabbed with a knife multiple times in the head, neck, torso and left hand, leaving his right eye blind and his liver and intestines damaged., one of the most controversial books in the Muslim world, is due to testify among the first witnesses at the Chautauqua County Court in New York.District Attorney Jason Schmidt told jurors that the attack was swift and sudden.
"I ran as fast as I could, lowered my shoulder and got as much of him with as much of me as a I could to disrupt what was happening," said Mr Steves, who was the media relations coordinator.The defendant has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault brought by the Chautauqua County district attorney.
