Cricket: Rain forced a premature end to the Governor General's XI match against England at North Sydney Oval on Thursday.

It’s been over a decade since England won a women’s Ashes title, but the Australians aren’t showing any signs of complacency ahead of the multi-format series that gets underway this weekend.

“Both teams were probably left a bit hollow after that series,” Australian opener Phoebe Litchfield told reporters at the SCG on Wednesday. Although it was a bittersweet outcome for the hosts, the drawn campaign proved Australia was vulnerable without superstar Meg Lanning in its starting XI. Heather Knight and her teammates were now confident they could take down the mighty Australians.

England has also unearthed a fierce pace duo in Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer, while spinner Sophie Ecclestone is ranked No. 1 on the ODI and T20I bowling rankings. “We are playing on Aussie soil, so we do have the upper hand in terms of that. But I think if we play our best cricket, we can beat anyone.”

“That’s always going to be a danger, how aggressive they are. They take the game on and try and play exciting cricket.”Following an undefeated home summer against New Zealand and Pakistan, the recent T20 World Cup campaign in the United Arab Emirates knocked the wind out of England’s sails. After failing to qualify for the knockouts courtesy of a shock loss to the West Indies, former national teammate Alex Hartley questioned the players’ fitness, comments that caused a stir within the squad.
