Exclusive: Half of NSW teachers say they were poorly trained to teach writing | JordsBaker
Almost half of NSW teachers – including two in five high school English teachers – say they were poorly trained to teach writing, and a quarter devote less than an hour a fortnight of class time to it.
"The craft of writing is complex," she said. "One of the key things we all recognise is sadly many teachers have gone through their own education without explicit knowledge of grammar. So when a student says, ‘How do I improve this sentence, what's wrong with it?' teachers are not always well equipped to have that knowledge."
While teachers of science and human society and its environment felt least confident, "it's surprising that 40 per cent of English teachers indicated that they were not prepared or minimally prepared for teaching writing," the survey found. Former NESA chairman Tom Alegounarias said the chief responsibility for teaching writing skills in high schools should also be returned to English teachers. "When it was made everyone's business, it then became nobody's business," he said.
