As the Greater Columbus Basketball Legends Association welcomed its 2022 class, inductees had no shortage of stories to tell about the game.
Reggie Rankin, Jene Davis, Jim Cleamons and others share Linden-McKinley connection
This is his first hall of fame induction, and Rankin said it made him reflect on the importance of those who came before him. Edward “Skip” Young, a 1967 Linden graduate and the co-founder and president of the GCBLA who was a fifth-round NBA draft pick by the Boston Celtics, was cited as a major influence by Paul Omari Barnes, a 2022 inductee who played at Northland from 1979-81.
“Those kinds of memories are what’s exciting,” he said. “The people who helped me get started in the business, most of them have passed away now but you think back and are appreciative of all the work that they did and all the help that they gave.”Although the beard is sporting a few gray hairs, the Northland boys’ basketball coach and CEO and owner of the Kingdom League was among the day’s younger honorees.
“The impact that it’s making, positivity, our motto is, ‘Spread love the Kingdom way,” he said. “For people to come in the name of basketball but leave feeling good and the kids that love basketball are able to see the top guys from Ohio State, the top guys from this area that play in the NBA and internationally, it means a lot. I have huge plans moving forward and I’m just thankful and grateful that what we’re doing is making such a positive impact.
