Property experts say you could fall foul of the Occupier’s Liability Act 1957

Many homeowners this spooky season will be going all out in a bid to impress their neighbours, trick-or-treaters or party guests at Halloween. But property experts at GetAgent have warned homeowners against putting up decorations incorrectly as they could be fined up to £5,000.

Whilst some of these decorations are a sure way to impress visitors to your home, experts have warned that you need to be careful, as they could land you a fine of up to £5,000 under the Occupier’s Liability Act 1957, if they pose a risk of injury or accidents to visitors or passers-by. Colby Short, CEO and co-founder of GetAgent said: “Whilst Halloween is a great time of year to show off your creative skills and bring some personality to your property, it’s important to make sure you do so in a safe and considerate way.

"To avoid risking a hefty fine, homeowners should ensure their Halloween decorations are carefully secured, electrical decorations are properly wired and installed, and spooky decorations are not placed in areas where they could cause obstruction or harm such as on walkways or doorsteps where passersby might not be able to clearly see them, especially as the darker nights draw in.”

To help homeowners in the lead-up to decorating their homes for Halloween, GetAgent have shared some quick tips to keep properties safe for visitors.
