343 Industries is reportedly building a new Halo game using the Unreal Engine, as the studio attempts to start from scratch...
head Matt Booty has assured 343 that it'll remain"in charge" of the Halo franchise going forward, although contractors will be brought in to aid the studio.
The reliance on external contractors could be a good indicator as to why 343 will now reportedly use Epic's Unreal Engine for future games, as it's a heavily used tool within the industry, and would limit the need to teach temporary staff how to use an in-house engine.
The switch to the Unreal Engine will reportedly see 343 work on a new game, code-name Tatanka, which the studio is developing alongside Certain Affinity. It seemingly started out as a battle royale game but could go in a different direction — apparently, the rumours that said 343 could be working on new story content for Halo Infinite weren't correct. Some developers were working on Unreal-based prototypes for future games instead.
