Across the city those that could gathered with friends and family in near perfect weather, capping off another pandemic year beset by lockdowns, restrictions and separations.

The 31-year-old and his partner, Aleks Rzadkowski, 39, both recently tested positive to COVID-19, meaning family was off limits while they remain confined to their apartment. Both Mr Mok and his wife have received their booster shots. “We’re cooking a 4.5 kilogram turkey for three people,” he said. “As they grieve, many Australians will be gathering together for the first time this Christmas in a long time, but sadly not all. Others are always on their own at this time of year, and it’s a very lonely time,” he said. “This pandemic, it continues to buffet us. The Omicron variant is just the latest challenge that we have faced. But together, always together and only together, we keep pushing through.

In Sydney’s Hyde Park up to 500 people gathered for the annual Wesley Mission Christmas lunch, held as an outdoor picnic for the first time in more than 100 years.
