ASIO boss Mike Burgess has warned politicians and others against inflaming religious and racial tensions on the back of the war in Israel, saying social cohesion was at risk.from radical members of the pro-Palestinian community, Mr Burgess said his agency was concerned about the “potential for opportunistic violence with little or no warning”.

“As I have said previously, words matter. ASIO has seen direct connections between inflamed language and inflamed community tensions.”The statement was issued just hours after Labor was privately expressing outrage at an interview Opposition Leader Peter Dutton gave to 2GB radio host Ray Hadley. “That, I think, is shameful because they’re, I think, giving, frankly, encouragement to see the sort of conduct that we saw at the Sydney Opera House.”
