The Albanese government has contacted the nation’s major airlines about helping repatriate the more than 10,000 Australian citizens and tourists in Israel. After The Australian Financial Review reported contingency planning was under way at the direction of Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Transport Minister Catherine King spoke to the chief executive officers of Qantas and Virgin Australia, Vanessa Hudson and Jane Hrdlicka.
The government believes there are currently adequate commercial flights for any dual citizens or visitor in Israel wishing to leave, but with the security situation deteriorating and major airlines cancelling flights, it expects there to be a need for repatriation flights.
