Hammond wins $7M federal grant for rail line overpass

The City of Hammond has secured a federal grant of more than $7 million for the construction of a new overpass aimed at alleviating the impact of frequent and prolonged blockages caused by stopped trains.

The grant came from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program. Created by the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the program is intended to help communities eliminate at-grade rail crossings, avoiding blockages and collisions.

Train blockages along the Norfolk Southern rail line, which cuts through the city diagonally from northwest to southeast — sometimes multiple times a week for hours at a time — have led to longer emergency response times and to some students at Hammond schools climbing over or under stopped trains as they walk to school, as detailed in aThe proposed Governor’s Parkway overpass would cut through a wooded area to link 173rd Street and 169th Street between Parrish Avenue and Grand Avenue.
