Queensland’s COVID-19 hospitalisations are still climbing as the third omicron wave makes itself felt, but authorities are staying the course on not introducing mask or vaccine mandates.

Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles has called on everyone to wear a mask if they feel they need to and to get as many COVID-19 shots as they’re eligible for in the face of the growing third Omicron wave.

By comparison, the hospitalisation rate reached 928 people on January 24 this year as the first omicron wave washed over the state. Given the impact of the current wave on hospitals, Miles was asked whether the government would allow health workers under 30 to access a fourth COVID-19 shot, along with everyone over 30 from Monday, but said that was still up to federal authorities.“They’re decisions that are taken based on the advice of ATAGI, they monitor what’s happening with the virus in other countries and around Australia and make decisions about when it’s best for people to get those vaccines,” he said.
