The reopening of Queensland's borders to interstate visitors will do little to revive the state's crippled tourism sector. Far flung tropical destinations such as Hamilton Island aren't expected to recover until overseas travel resumes in 2021.

Queensland’s tourism industry says the reopening of the state's borders is a ray of hope after it came to a standstill during the coronavirus pandemic.

"We have to hope that the 5 to 6 million Australians that normally would take their holidays overseas spending $50 billion will consider Queensland destinations. Mark Olsen, Tourism Tropical North Queensland's CEO said interstate visitors would generate some cash flow for the region, but it had lost a key market with the ban on Victorian travellers.

Mr Olsen said tourism in the region generated about $3.5 billion a year, and supported one in five jobs but forecasted more than $2 billion worth of visitor expenditure would be lost this year. To lure local and interstate travellers to book overnight stays, the Queensland Government launched a new tourism campaign called "QueenslandBut some regional airports are running at reduced capacity and under a thin flight schedule.
