Moderates had been calling for McQueen to resign after she said members should rejoice that “lefties” in the party had lost their seats at the last federal election.

Moderates and many conservatives in the Liberal Party united to block former vice president Teena McQueen from the party’s federal executive, in a move viewed by some as vital to the future direction of the party.

McQueen was unsuccessful on Friday night in her attempt to be re-elected as vice president, with Caroline Inge, Gerry Wheeler, Ben Small and Alexandra Sinenko being elected to the key decision-making body. A senior conservative source in the party said McQueen’s public commentary had been unhelpful ever since she was elected vice president in 2017, and it would now allow the party to better focus on issues that Australians care about.Advertisement
