Kerrin McEvoy and Chris Waller have lifted The Everest trophy fives times between them but never together, and they combine this year with Golden Slipper-winning colt Shinzo.
The quiet of a Rosehill winter morning is about as far as it gets from the rumble of a crowd 45,000 as The Everest field go to the barriers on Saturday., but it’s where jockey Kerrin McEvoy started his quest for a fourth victory in the world’s richest race on turf.
The Everest was on the agenda for Shinzo as soon as English jockey Ryan Moore pulled him up after winning the Golden Slipper, but who would ride him wasn’t as clear. “We know how important it is to get them working right, and Kerrin does that. He has ridden him a lot.” “Kerrin is a go-to jockey because you know he will ride the weight without a problem, which is important, but you also know what you are going to get,” Waller continues. “He wins Melbourne Cups and Everests. You get experience, and that counts for a lot on young horses.”
