Zsasz is one of the most horrifying members of Batman’s rogue’s gallery, and in Harley Quinn #24, the Maid of Mischief abducts him, thinking he may have crucial information on who tried to kill Harley - and in the process reveals something about the villain that gives him a new layer.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle and first appearing in 1992’s Shadow of the Bat #1, Zsasz is a serial killer who has no discernible pattern to his kills - he randomly fixates on individuals and then hunts them relentlessly. Like many of Batman’s villains, Zsasz has a tragic past: born wealthy, Zsasz went into a deep depression upon his parent’s death, and after losing his fortune, went down a dark and nihilistic path.
Mr. Zsasz Isn't Just a Serial Killer Zsasz is already one of the most unsettling members of Batman’s rogue’s gallery, a mere serial killer who still manages to stand out among the likes of Two-Face, Scarecrow and the Joker - but Harley’s revelation in this issue gives Zsasz a new layer. Harley pointed out that Zsasz has a deep connection to life, a statement that might seem odd given his motif, but it works in giving him a quasi-supernatural edge.
As a genius psychiatrist, Harley's insights yet again expose what's really going on with a Gotham supervillain. This reveal even opens the door to the possibility that Zsasz's kills could be dictated by a larger plan he senses but doesn't explicitly understand - is he somehow shaping events in Gotham by killing specific people?
Despite being far closer to a real serial killer than the rest of Batman's colorful rogues gallery, Zsasz has managed to make a name for himself in Gotham. This new revelation, that Zsasz is “in tune” with Gotham shows him to be a far more shrewd and observant villain than initially thought, effectively possessing a hidden power. Harley Quinn has exposed a new side, and unsettling potential agenda, of this R-rated villain.
