's work creating permanently affordable homeownership options for people with low incomes.
The county's apprenticeship funding has been in the works for a long time, Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis said. The $9.1 million contract approved Tuesday is part of a broader group of county workforce development initiatives. “Harris County continues to show how good government can be responsive to the population’s needs," Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia said."This apprenticeship partnership with labor serves as the latest example of that approach. Access to training leading to high-paying jobs will help keep our county competitive and help build the workforce of today and tomorrow.
Expanding training opportunities not only produces a more competent, qualified workforce, but also provides a better income for families. "The limitation is primarily the cost of trainees' compensation while they're getting trained," Ramabhadran said."The program also currently does not offer the training and skills needed for the transition to zero emission buses. Thanks to the apprenticeship advantage program, we're excited to announce our plans to broaden the scope of our training to prepare bus mechanics for the coming transition.
