Scanners are used for toll entry at an entrance for the Westpark Tollway, Thursday, June 16, 2016, in Houston. The daily commute for tens of thousands of drivers in Harris County could get a little cheaper after Labor Day, if officials can finalize a planned 10 percent decrease in toll rates announced Tuesday.
Efforts to lower tolls began last year, when officials urged toll road Executive Director Roberto Treviño to assess ways to reduce costs for drivers while maintaining necessary revenues. Over 10 years, according to figures shared with Commissioners Court, the reduction could total $860 million, money that would remain with drivers rather than go to the toll road authority, Precinct Two Commissioner Adrian Garcia said. The new rate could mean a savings of $200 or so for five-day commuters depending on the length of the trip and the route. For someone paying $3.50 each way to use the entire Hardy Toll Road, the savings of 70 cents daily would amount to $182 annually.
