Auburn has rotated two quarterbacks throughout the season, and during the team’s blowout loss to Penn State on Saturday night, Bryan Harsin almost called on a third.
With T.J. Finley benched early in the second half and Auburn’s offense struggling to generate any sort of consistency against Penn State, Harsin considered turning to Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada to take the reins of the offense but ultimately chose to stick with Robby Ashford for the remainder of the game. It would have been Calzada’s first appearance for Auburn after transferring to the program in January and finishing third in the Tigers’ offseason quarterback competition.
Finley, who has started all three games this season, completed 11-of-19 passes for 152 yards to go with his turnovers. He was pulled early in the third quarter after his fumble on a strip-sack handed Penn State the ball at Auburn’s 30-yard line with a 21-6 lead. When Auburn’s offense returned to the field for its next possession, trailing 24-6, Ashford was at the helm.
Calzada started 10 games at Texas A&M last season, including an upset of Alabama, and completed 184-of-328 passes for 2,185 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. With Haynes King returning healthy for the Aggies after last season, Calzada chose to transfer, and he was the first quarterback Auburn added in the portal.
