Season seven of the AFLW will start with a Thursday night clash between traditional rivals Carlton and Collingwood at Ikon Park on August 25.

The first AFLW chapter of the famous Hawthorn and Essendon rivalry could be set for Marvel Stadium if the sides’ coaches get their way.

Speaking at the fixture launch at Ikon Park on Monday, the AFL’s clubs and broadcast boss Travis Auld said a lot of heavy lifting went into bringing seven season forward to August and the league wanted to make that worthwhile with a fixture that maximised opportunity. AFL general manager of competitions, Laura Kane said it was an ambition of the fixture to make the game accessible to people all over the country, while also celebrating deep-seated connections and histories that many clubs have with local venues.
