‘Have I missed something’: New NAB policy riles customers

Victorian public servant Noble Yamak sold his late mother-in-law’s car this month and wanted to deposit the cash in the bank. But the 61-year-old was told by the National Australia Bank teller in Ballarat the bank no longer accepted cash payments for credit cards.

“Who would refuse money when you come into a bank? That’s the bit I can’t get my head around,” Mr Yamak said. “I’m giving you cash, $1800 in crisp $50 notes, and you don’t want it? NAB staff were told to explain the new policy was in customers’ best interests because it allows them to “experience the benefits of options that are faster, simpler and more convenient and secure”. In a statement, NAB retail executive Krissie Jones said staff were encouraging customers to bank online so branch staff could “spend more time on more complex customer conversations, including supporting customers with education on evolving digital channels”.

Finance Sector Union national secretary Julia Angrisano said NAB had set targets for staff to reduce over-the-counter transactions, which resulted in staff intercepting customers at the door to direct them to self-service systems.
