There's a whole cinematic universe of cringey festive flicks populating streaming services. This new genre of Yuletide trash makes you wonder: Have we stopped making classic Christmas films?
Ask anyone what their favourite Christmas movie is and chances are they'll name one of the few that have reached the pinnacle of being considered a classic: Elf, Home Alone, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Love Actually, Die Hard.
But don't confuse that trilogy with Christmas with a Prince, which is a totally different thing, or A Christmas Princess, which is on Stan. That's not even mentioning the old school Christmas classics such as It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street, which were both released in the 1940s. "The benchmark for getting produced and needing to make a return at the box office was much greater," he says. "They needed to really hit the mark commercially," Dr Sternberg said.
While all these new streaming films might feel like they're following the same formula, the sheer number of holiday movies being released every year also means greater opportunities for more diverse storytelling.
