Writer/producer Aaron Sorkin had one rule on the set of Being the Ricardos. Nicole Kidman explains why she broke it. ILoveLucy NicoleKidman

, the project’s producer and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin had gently set a rule that Ball’s real-life daughter Lucie Arnaz should probably not visit the set while Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, who star in the film as legendary actress Lucille Ball and her producer husband Desi Arnaz, were filming their scenes.

“That was important to me,” Kidman explains when we sit down to talk. “It’s her mama. If someone was playing me and they didn’t invite my daughters, come on, man. This is her mum, so I needed her there. And also she sent me recordings and she was not someone to be scared of. She was someone to embrace, and she was a wealth of knowledge and I needed her, and so did Javier.”

To describe Lucille Ball as an American icon feels like an understatement. She was a successful film actress but her real fame would come on television, one of the first film actors whose trade down to the smaller screen delivered astonishing success, as the star of, the hit sitcom that ran for 180 episodes between 1951 and 1957. At its height the show drew a weekly audience of 45 million.

“When I said yes, I didn’t quite realise what I was saying yes to. Then I was like, maybe I’m not the right person,” Kidman says. “And I put that out there. I said to Aaron, are you sure? And he said, you are absolutely the right person for this. I completely believe you can do it. Get on the plane, get over here, and we’re going to go day by day and we will get there.”
